In Dido and Aeneas, Dido is the Queen of Carthage who falls in love with Aeneas the Trojan hero who sought to establish Rome after the Greeks had captured his homeland Troy. Dido forced to choose between love and honor, when Aeneas sought to destroy Carthage to gain power. Even as the witches Troy to break up her relationship between the two, it is dido that is most hopeful that things will work out, but this does not go as planned. In the tragic opera, music is closely intertwined with the characterization of the individuals. In the end, Dido faced difficulty living alone without Aeneas by her side as she laments about her situation precipitating her death.
