Art can be used to enable individuals to understand themselves and the artists in many ways.  Among the various expressions that artists try to depict in their artworks is identity. Identity is the main issue, especially in the modern social environment, as individuals struggle to cope with the various forms of identities that have prevailed in the society (Fine 165). Identity plays a central role in the community and the lives of individuals. For this reason, this exhibition is dedicated to displaying some of the artworks which portray the theme of identity. The artworks displayed in this virtual exhibition reveal how artists discuss and explore the theme using different characteristics.  Their use of unique styles, forms, conventions, and codes enable them to express and explore the theme of identity. Vera Girivi focuses on the beauty of women and their appreciation regardless of their size and body features (jamesbarronart). The artwork triggers a feeling of self-appreciation despite the stereotyping especially among women who are considered plus-sized. Yan Cong’s piece also portrays a rare and extraordinary portrayal of a repressive society (Conceison 63). The piece of art brings to light the struggles that certain individuals face when trying to find their identity and fully achieve their potential in a society that is restraining.


 A majority of the various art movements formed throughout history tend to aim towards the central theme of identity. The need to be recognized and equally treated inspired artists such as Carolee Schneemann who employed the concept of kinetic theater in her artwork, ‘Meat Joy’ to try and expose and confront change in the society’s repressive conventions and cultural taboos (Schneemann 205). Similarly, Lorna Simpson’s ‘Wigs’ also depicts the issue faced by black women as they try to find their identity (Copeland 100). The wigs represent stigma against black women and the shift to natural hairstyles to regain their authenticity and identity.
