Candidate
The candidate is Lupe Valdez. Valdez is the Democrat nominee for governor and she won the Democrat primaries on May 222. Before she decided to venture into politics, she was the Dallas County sheriff. Evidently, she was tired of the blue uniform and ready to delve into the deep ends of Texas politics. After she won the Democrat primaries, she glowed in pride but many suspect that she will lose to Abbott. Well, it is not yet known what will happen but it appears that the odds are against her.
Valdez is the perfect candidate for Texas. She is not only a Texan native but has served as a sheriff from 2005 to 2017. She represents that which is American in that she was born to Mexican–American migrant parents. Raised in San Antonio, she endured the hard life and worked in the fields just to get herself through college. She started by earning an undergraduate degree and then proceeded to earn a Master’s degree in Criminology and Criminal Justices. Her devotion and dedication to ensure that Texas and the entire country is different led her to join the United States Army. While in the army, she was as diligent and meticulous as they come and later earned the rank of captain.
Her quest to see a different Texas and love for her home led her to launch her law enforcement career. However, having been an outsider to the politics of Texas, she decided to launch her political career and won the hearts of the Democrats. However, on March 6, she got 43% of the total votes cast and this led to a runoff on May 22, 2018, where she won and became the first Latina to be nominated for the governorship race. Moreover, she became the first person who has publicly declared herself as gay to be nominated for governor.
Campaign Message
Valdez’s campaign message will be divided into the different voting blocks found in Texas. However, the people she will be aiming to capture or motivate are the nonvoting Texans.
The message she aims to propagate is that she is an outsider and a local girl. Even though she has been a sheriff, she was not involved in the politics of Texas and therefore, her powers were limited. Looking at her past political life, it is clear that she is not tainted by the political system.
Aside from the above, she is also a local girl. As already stated, she was born and raised in San Antonio. She has lived her entire life in Texas and even though she was born in a poor neighborhood, she managed to put herself through school. Her story is indeed one that resonates well with a majority of Texans. It is indeed a true success story and therefore, it would make sense if she finally makes it to the governorship office.
Campaign Strategy
Valdez’s success is greatly dependent on the people who do not vote as well as the Latinos. In his article, Milburn (np) writes that Texas “is not a red state. It’s a non-voting state.” This statement has been echoed by different people and Young (np) writes that th...
