A major observation from chapter 4 is the popularity and dynamics of the American Dream. The dream is so popular among Americans that it is part of their ethos and culture. In fact, those who were born after the good times of the post war period were even scared and wondered if the dream will ever return. However, that popularity is not surprising because the American Dream has deeper roots and its tenets are found in the Declaration of Independence. The declaration states that “we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. However, among the dynamics of the American Dream is that attaining “happiness” does not imply that an individual has achieved the dream. For instance, the chapter indicates that even people who were happy at their jobs were still resentful of the American Dream (p 107). Nevertheless, for immigrants, being in a peaceful society was equal to attaining the American dream despite the high unemployment and inflation rates that existed in the 1980s.

After the United States hockey team defeated the Russians at the Olympic Games final, the chapter sates that “the underdog story reminded Americans that the traditional values of hard work, dedication, and team spirit had not been completely thrown into the dustbin of history and that dreams really come true” (p 105).
