Part 1
In the book, after Astrid’s mother is prisoned for killing her boyfriend, Astrid is taken away to foster home. Before the social services take her away, she takes some of her mother’s possessions and among them is a folding knife. This is a one of the significant symbols that is used in the book. It represents the security element, to her mother as it was the knife that she used to stab her boyfriend with. Her mother had been the source of protection and now that she was away in prison, Astrid was vulnerable; she needed something that would protect her as her mother had once done. Astrid took the knife to create in herself the sense that she could handle her life the way her mother did. When her mother tried to defend herself and her daughter Astrid, she would always pull out the knife and unfold it in her thighs and then hold it close to her body (Fitch). Before she finally killed her boyfriend, Astrid’s mother had fended off him when he came to the house trying to force his way in. as such the knife held a lot of significance to the family. This was at a time Astrid and her mother had visited Barry and speaks to the about how twisted in her mind she, to ever understand her.
Part 2
Reading through the book, it easy to see how much problems that Astrid would get herself into, not by choice, but fate served it that way. She was always in need of help, as most of the foster homes that she would be taken to, would always abuse her. While it is quite difficult to understand Astrid let alone her mother, it is easy to see that she needed help. However, most of the time she would be the one that was giving care to those around her such as Claire, Starr’s and Marvel’s children. This can easily be tied to her psychological dilemma as she grew up (Fitch). She never had a mother that wou...
