Why Technology Favors Tyranny Summary

Coursework Instructions:

Must complete THREE posts on Blackboard for a total of about 250 words (approximately the same as a two-page, double-spaced composition.) One of your posts should be at least 100 words in length. Online Forum Two is based on Yuval Harari’s article, Why Technology Favors Tyranny, the article you read for class discussion on Wednesday, November 6th. Another copy of the article is attached. Also, here is the link to the 18-minute TED Talk on the same subject that we viewed in class: https://www(dot)npr(dot)org/2018/11/02/662619612/yuval-noah-harari-could-big-data-destroy-liberal-democracy

If “Dataism” is a new faith based around the power of algorithms, do you believe the future may be one in which big data is worshiped, artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence, and some people develop superhuman abilities? What are some of the unprecedented upheavals in human society that uniting infotech and biotech will create? Under such conditions, can liberal democracy and free-market economics survive?Because the A1 technological revolution’s work requires so few laborers, is Silicon Valley creating a tiny ruling class and an immense “useless class?” Would a universal basic income paid to people regardless of whether they work be a way to mitigate the resulting social disruption? The AI revolution now gathering momentum is not a single event but a cascade of ever bigger disruptions that will confront humankind with the hardest trial it has yet encountered. Can Al-enabled corporations help enshrine the rule of law and promote democratic freedoms or must AI result in a dystopian corporate nation state?Question 6Questions 7Question 8Question 9

Nationalization of data is one solution that would curb the power of large corporations to control people’s data. But history shows that we are not better off in the hands of overly powerful governments, so how can big tech companies become “guarantors of the liberal democratic social order?”

Harari’s articlc examines potentially dangerous outcomes posed by the advent of Artificial Intelligence. Harari’s prognostications are a warning, but the outcomes he describes are NOT inevitable if society takes proper precautions. While Artificial Intelligence is already profoundly impacting the way business is conducted, informed opinion cautions that we arc only at the beginning of the AI revolution. Given all the issues we arc examining in this class, AI may offer the greatest opportunity for business to achieve a sustainable “shared value” future, or, if mishandled, AI could facilitate a new age of authoritarianism that Hariri is warning us about.

Answer 6
Based on the power of algorithms, “dataism” is a new faith, and people might worship big data in the future. Currently, governments and a small group of elites control more information since it has become a significant asset in the 21st century. In a few decades to come, artificial intelligence (AI) will surpass human intelligence, and some individuals with large amounts of data will develop superhuman abilities. Yuval Noah Harari argues that as AI improves, the demand for human creativity and intelligence will disappear gradually. He gives an excellent example of Stockfish 8 and Google’s AlphaZero programs. Despite Stockfish 8 acquiring centuries of chess experience, it was defeated 28 times out of 72 by AlphaZero (Harari 66). Consequently, AI helped AlphaZero to master chess moves in only four hours without any assistance from humans.
Answer 7
Harari is right when he says that the information technology is rapidly growing and that biotechnology offers a window into people’s inner lives. The combination of biotech and infotech will create unprecedented upheavals, which include genetic engineering, blockchain, and globalization (Harari 66). These new disruptive technologies influence how society functions and how individuals relate to each other. In other words, the world will never be the same again due to the rise of disruptive technologies. Under such conditions, free-market economics and liberal democracy will be o...
