Course Description: This course is a survey of the field of comparative politics. The course takes a thematic approach while focusing on politics in a number of countries. After discussing, “What is comparative politics?” and what and how we “compare,” we will go on to examine and compare different forms of government and political systems in selected parts of the world. POLS 140 is a requirement for all Political Science and International Relations majors.
Synthesis Paper: Write a 2,000- to 2,500-word paper expanding upon the topic of a Critical Reflection of your choosing. You should approach and structure the paper as you would a research paper, using the sources you have selected for your annotated bibliography. I am looking for you to do a deeper dive into the Critical Reflection to produce your own analysis of the issue rather than simply describing it in greater detail. This will look different for each topic, so if you would like to talk through any ideas about how to develop your argument and frame your analysis please feel free to come talk to me in office hours and I’d be happy to discuss it with you. Please use 1-inch margins, 12-point Times New Roman font, and double space the body of the paper. You are required to upload it to the assignment drop box in the Canvas course shell; please do not bring a hard copy to class. I will not be able to accept papers that are handed in via e-mail or hard copy.

Scholars call this phenomenon of Democratic Backsliding “a gradual, deliberate, but open-ended process of de-democratization” (Sitter & Bakke, 2019). In this article, the author would like to discuss the problem of democratic backsliding and determine various factors that may affect or influence it, such as the nation-state’s wealth, culture, and religion. The following sections will focus more on the differentiation between the possible effects of these three factors in the happening and speed of this phenomenon. All in all, the author believes that understanding the effects of these factors...
