The term Social problem is ascribed to a condition, a set of events or group of individuals constituting a situation that brews trouble in a society. Social problems affect people from all walks of life and are determined by the times a generation lives in. This problems are known to breach some human rights and when not properly addressed would escalate into disasters. Only until a condition violates certain fundamental values and beliefs of a society should it be considered a social problem.
Social Problem Currently Faced in the United States
Drug and substance abuse is a major social problem that is affecting the society either directly or indirectly. Drug and substance abuse refers to conditions that are associated with the consumption of substances that are harmful to the body. Such conditions alter how an individual behaves and has a health repercussion tied to it. This menace has taken a prevalent toll in the United States thus contributing to other issues, such as violence, stress, child abuse and even crime.
The problem of drug and substance abuse can be considered a social problem since its effects are characterized as having negative attributes upon an individual’s life. The well being of the society is also at stake due to this problem and this drives the entire society into finding lasting solutions for it. As a social problem, this issue depends on the values and beliefs of the society in finding solutions that are geared towards change.
