Assignment 3 – Review and Personal Response

For this assignment, review the Milanote boards for the various thematic sections.  Choose artworks and/or monuments that appeal to you.  Give the relevant information about your objects/monuments, such as title, medium, materials, and size, and be sure to give the date and period or culture.  Then write a brief (at least a couple of sentences) account of what appeals to you about the works you chose.  Be sure to make substantive statements – observations that relate directly to the themes.  You can either recount information that I have given, or you are welcome to extend that information with your own observations, or you can make your own points – again, as long they relate to the work and the theme.

Please choose at least four works from the three Materials and Techniques boards (from all the boards, not four from each).  Also, please choose at least one work from the Order(ing) board, two works from the Body board, and two works from the Power board.

Art has since time immemorial been a significant part of mankind. Over the years, individuals have found various ways of preserving their art, including through museums. This essay proposes to discuss four pieces that have been preserved over the years and their thematic concerns.
Gebel el Arak period Knife (3300-3200BCE)
The first item is a knife from Gebel el-Arak from 3200-3300 BC. The hilt of the knife is hippopotamus tooth ivory, and the blade is slate. Additionally, the blade appears to be serrated across. The serrated blade shows that the blade was ceremonial. The knife also portrays a naval battle (LLC, 2020). A sense of order is portrayed in the way the soldiers are arranged. The first painting portrays order in the social hierarchy. The arrangement of the figures shows that there is a certain motive in play. It seems remarkable that the ancient Egyptian perception of the order has lived on for more than three millennia. Even today, armies have a leadership structure that shares certain traits with the discovered in ancient Egypt.
David (1501-1504 BCE)
David is an astonishing sculpture created by Michel Angelo in Florence. The white marble sculpture is about 17 feet tall and weighs more than 12 000 pounds. The sculpture strikes a simple pose since any other action might have compromised balance. Additionally, it is an embodiment of the beauty of High Renaissance art and the technical skill contained in Greek sculpting. It also signifies youthful strength and human beauty (Michelangelo.org, 2020). Critics state that the sculpture is especially impressive because Michel Angelo does not portray David with a sword in hand or Goliath’s head at his feet but rather striking a thoughtful pose
