Moral Injury
Moral injury is defined as a distressing emotional, psychological, behavioral, social, and sometimes spiritual wake after exposure to traumatic and unusual stressful events that contradict an individual moral compass and beliefs. Additionally, a moral injury can happen in response to witnessing or acting in situations that contradict individuals' beliefs (Callaway & Spates,2016 p 171). In the military, individuals experience strong and distressful disasters, which result in fear, confusion, guilt, hopelessness, helplessness, anger, and anxiety. With great leadership, comes great responsibility. One of the responsibilities of a leader is to ensure the well-being of their team members physically, psychologically, and emotionally. This includes mitigating opportunities for moral injury before they occur.
Notably, leaders can mitigate moral injury before it happens by promoting and encouraging a culture of moral and ethical behaviors and providing guidance and training on ethical decision-making. This will allow team members to act and make decisions based on their moral grounds and not what is expected of them (Litz et al., 2009 pp 703). Also, leaders can mitigate moral injury by ensuring team members does not do engage in activities that violate their beliefs or values. For instance, in our camp, our leader respects everyone's beliefs, religion, and culture. Muslims are accorded the respect they deserve and are not sent on duties when they are on their special prayers or holidays. Also, our troop is all-inclusive and integrates individuals from all walks of life which makes it to mitigate moral injury.
