Both cultural and theological matters influence Christians’ view on geopolitics, especially among American Christians who are increasingly concerned about how competing world views are likely to affect international diplomacy. The Christian faith allows the Christians to figure out what matters. The domestic policy affects the international affairs, while the role of Judeo-Christian ideals prominent in the American political sphere, showing that geopolitics and Christianity are interlinked. This paper on the rise and fall of nations representing the story of Augustine of Hippo, it will also highlight on the responsibility of Christians with regards to geopolitics and the mandates of the gospel.
Even though, there is no agreement on a universal history of civilizations various philosophers have attempted to explain the rise and fall of civilizations over time. Greek philosophers as well as Arab philosophers were prominent, but Augustine of Hippo had a profound impact on the Christians in Rome in his attempt to explain the rise and fall of Rome. Augustine was a devout Christian who undertook to teach about his ideal view of Christianity. Upon the invasion of Rome by Augustine and his army, Rome had begun to falter. On one hand, the Roman pagans blamed Christians for the fall of Rome, but Augustine stated that Rome never had any protection from the gods any way.
The divergent opinion between the conquered pagans and he Christian Romans, provided an opportunity to Augustine to talk more about Christianity. To Augustine the fall of Rome was simply not the first sign of decline in civilization but only increased its demise. Augustine advocated for a biblical perspective, that the fall of mankind started in the Garden of Eden. It also precipitated the fall in civilization, and hence international politics ought to be viewed from a Christian angle. The fall of Rome, compounded problems for Christians who were not sure about how to live, when the only civilization they knew was Rome.
Likening Babylon to the earthly home and Jerusalem to the heavenly home was an attempt to draw the line on what Augustine viewed to be the signs that the people of God would eventually triumph in the heavenly home. However in order to live well in the heavenly home, Christians were encouraged to live justly and peaceful lives following the will of God. Even in the international scene allegiance to God is an important virtue advocated by Augustine which can inspire Christian diplomats.
