In both forms, a story is portrayed using similar methods or elements such as actors and actresses, costumes, sets, scripts, and lighting. Both film and theater producers are able to bring a story to life using these elements, and their artistic choices can enhance the drama of the story.
Think of one of your favorite movies and consider how different artistic choices were made in the film’s production. Flash Dance, Dirty Dancing, Dream girls, or the Five Heartbeats.
Which elements were most effective and why?

Released in 2006, Dreamgirls is a romantic musical film by Bill Condon. The story of this Hollywood movie was inspired by the 1981 Broadway musical of the same name. A lot of artistic choices were made during production. For example, the musical’s story was the same, but changes were made when the hometown was moved from Chicago to Detroit. In addition, the roles of different characters were closely related to their real-life inspirations.
