Ways and Means: Sunburn Effect from the Ozone Layer

Invent a new, impossible, sculptural material and create a written concept for an impossible sculpture made from that material. Use 2 paragraphs, and up to 1 page. First, consider this list of materials and components which have been used in sculpture, both traditional and contemporary

Paragraph 1: invent a NEW FICTIONAL sculptural material that combines some of the characteristics of any THREE of the components listed above. Give your new material a name. Your new invented material should be an impossible material, with impossible, contradictory properties. Describe the properties, and list the source material from above (eg bronze, feathers, water etc…) form which these characteristics come. For example, you could design a magnetic wind that can be crunched into shapes like foil.

Paragraph 2: describe a concept for a sculpture made from this material. This sculpture should take full advantage of the impossible material’s properties, and it should be something impossible - or close to impossible - to build with current technology. What does it look like, what is its scale, where is it installed or presented, how does it function, how are the special material properties manifested in the work, and what is the goal of the artwork (for example what kind of experience does it give the viewer, or what is its intended effect in the world)?
