The fact that McDonald is the biggest fast foods organization in the world does not imply that the organization is free from problems. As evidence, the organization does not distribute profits to farmers who provide raw materials to McDonalds fairly. Further, the relationship between business and religion has existed for long and religion advocates for fair trade. It is also notable that McDonalds is guided by a principle of commitment to excellence (Gibson n.d). However, the organizations commitment to excellence is one-way because their customers are happy because of their quality yet, farmers are unhappy about the same quality of their services. Clearly, the McDonalds is experiencing problems with the distribution of resources to farmers. Thus, it is necessary to apply justice perspectives to conclude that McDonalds should pay coffee farmers in proportions that reflect the actual profit earned by selling coffee.
How can scholars understand the meaning and application of justice perspectives? According to Brenkert and Beauchamp (2010), the justice perspective focuses on how justified or unjustified our actions distribute burdens and benefits in society. It requires consistency when making judgments about people in a society. Simply put, justice translates into giving everyone what he or she deserves. However, some philosophers believe that justice is about treating others as you would wish to be treated. The latter interpretation is accepted depending on the circumstances surrounding particular interpretations of the justice perspective. It is critical that the subject of justice perspective is important especially when people differ on important issues, which in turn requires the application of the perspective. Important to the idea of justice perspective is not determining what people deserve, but how to determine what people deserve. What criteria and principles can help in identifying what everyone deserves?
The fundamental principle for ascertaining justice was crafted more than two thousand year ago. The principle states “equals should be treated equally and unequals unequally” (Painter-Morland and Bos, 2011) Put simply, the principle advocates that individuals be treated the same unless when they differ in ways that are relevant to the situation of interest. It follows that we find many differences justifiable even though people may be treated differently. For instance, we all believe it is justified for a man to give attention to her girlfriend more than other friends, even though the man could be sharing all other social gatherings with his friends. Human nature also believes that there are circumstances when giving people different treatment is unjustified. For example, the entire human society agrees that it is unjustified...
