Assignment

In a 2-3 page paper, please do the following:

Discuss how the peer-reviewed journal article you have chosen is important to our understanding of business ethics.

Keys to the Assignment

  • Summarize the article in 1-2 paragraphs; and
  • Discuss the relevance of the article to business ethics (in short, why does this article matter)?

Assignment Expectations

Your paper will be evaluated using the following five (5) criteria:

  • Assignment-Driven Criteria (Precision and Breadth): Does the paper fully address all Keys to the Assignment? Are the concepts behind the Keys to the Assignment addressed accurately and precisely using sound logic? Does the paper meet minimum length requirements?
  • Critical Thinking (Critical Thinking and Depth): Does the paper demonstrate graduate-level analysis, in which information derived from multiple sources, expert opinions, and assumptions has been critically evaluated and synthesized in the formulation of a logical set of conclusions? Does the paper address the topic with sufficient depth of discussion and analysis?
  • Business Writing (Clarity and Organization): Is the paper well written (clear, developed logically, and well organized)? Are the grammar, spelling, and vocabulary appropriate for graduate-level work? Are section headings included in all papers? Are paraphrasing and synthesis of concepts the primary means of responding to the Keys to the Assignment, or is justification/support instead conveyed through excessive use of direct quotations?
  • Effective Use of Information (Information Literacy and References): Does the paper demonstrate that the student has read, understood and can apply the background materials for the module? If required, has the student demonstrated effective research, as evidenced by student’s use of relevant and quality (library?) sources? Do additional sources used in paper provide strong support for conclusions drawn, and do they help in shaping the overall paper?
  • Citing Sources: Does the student demonstrate understanding of APA Style of referencing, by inclusion of proper end references and in-text citations (for paraphrased text and direct quotations) as appropriate? Have all sources (e.g., references used from the Background page, the assignment readings, and outside research) been included, and are these properly cited? Have all end references been included within the body of the paper as in-text citations?

Business Ethics
Acting in a manner that is ethical entails differentiating between wrong and right and settling on the right choice. Identifying business practices that are not ethical is rather simple. For instance, a company must never use child labor. Business ethics is understood as the applied ethics discipline which addresses the ethical features of commercial activity. They are ethical principles which guide how an organization behaves (Pastoriza, Arino & Ricart, 2009). The principles which determine a person’s actions are also applicable to business.
McMurrian, R. C., & Matulich, E. (2006). Building Customer Value and Profitability with Business Ethics. Journal of Business & Economics Research, 4(11): 11-18
Summary of the article
This article essentially talks about the correlation between profitability and ethics in business. As a result of continually altering competitive environments, McMurrian and Matulich (2006) pointed out that companies need to find new ways of meeting competition apart from the usual ways of delivering better products, lower prices, or more services associated with a sell. There is the view that ethics in business is a constraint on an organization’s profitability; this viewpoint suggests that profit and ethics are inversely related since there are times when doing what is actually right reduces the company’s profits. Nonetheless, a positive viewpoint is that there is in fact an association between a company’s ethical activities and behaviors and its bottom-line results. The customer value concept is essential to the value chain model and the 4 elements of customer value are: (i) process quality – the business relationship that occurs between an organization and a customer and the personal relationship between representatives of the company such as customer service representatives and salespeople, and a customer. (ii) Results produced for the customer; (iii) costs of acquiring the item; and (iv) price to customer.
