Introduction
Coevolutionary gaming is a strategic planning tool that has been used to improve group decision making. In their article ‘Take Your Third Move First,’ Jeff Cares and Jim Miskel presents coevolutionary war gaming as unconventional scenario planning tool. The article argues that planning and decision making processes should never be built in what the authors refers as in a "vacuum" (Cares & Miskel, 2007). The authors explains that making decisions in a vacuum refers to where the decision makers merely looks at existing facts and historical data as the basis for making decisions and assuming that the competitors who the decisions will affect will do nothing about it.
How Coevolutionary Gaming Can Facilitate Group Decision Making
Decisions made using the vacuum technique are shortsighted because of their lack of taking considerations of the competitor’s reactions and coming up with counter plans related to that outcome (Rosin & Belew, 1997). Decisions that are merely taken on the basis of the available data only are damaging and impacts the organization more negatively that it would have been to maintain the status quo. An example of a decision made using the vacuum process is where a newcomer company in an industry makes a decision to reduce prices of a particular product in order to obtain a better market share.
A decision to cut prices based on evaluation of existing data may seem a simple decision to take but such a decision mistakenly assume that the competitors will do nothing about it. The available data fails to demonstrate that market leaders are in a better position to engage in a price war and overwhelm the newcomer because of their stronger market volume and wider economy of scale. The market leader have the potential to cut their prices below the breakeven point which should be higher especially for a newcomer. Such a strategy by the market leaders would overwhelm the newcomer and eventually see the collapse of their business as the sales made becomes impossible to support the operations of the business (Cares & Miskel, 2007). Such a decision would therefore turn out to be more fatal than for example making a decision of identifying a new geographic market niche and aggressively building their brand image and awareness in that region.
The purpose of coevolutionary war gaming come in handy because the competitors are taken into consideration and the counter reactions of the business also taken into consideration. This means that the decision being made is re-evaluated and the impacts of those decisions are closely observed before implementing the decisions. This is achieved by dividing the groups involved in making the decisions into subgroups and each subgroup is tasked with dealing with one objective (Rosin & Belew, 1997).
The subgroups are engaged in a "war game" that involves determining which subgroup emerges the winner based on varied criteria used such as sales, market share among others.
