The competencies necessary for job performance are resources, interpersonal, information, systems and technology (US Department of Labor, 1991). It is necessary to assess the competences along with foundation skills, including basic, thinking skills and personal qualities (US Department of Labor, 1991). Basic skills are related to arithmetic, listening, speaking skills, reading and writing. Think skills entail reasoning, decision making, creativity, visualizing and solving problems. Personal qualities to improve job performance are honesty, integrity, self-management, self-esteem, responsibility and sociability (US Department of Labor, 1991).
Following the interview, the HR personnel stated that the employees who were primarily business analysts satisfactorily relied on the five competencies. On resources, application of time was the most prominent, and interpersonal skills were utilized in leading and teaching. The analysts need to assess information from various sources and hence collecting and interpreting data was critical for the analyst’s job. Younger employees understood how the technological systems worked better than their older counterparts, and would effectively operate with them.
