Understanding the culture of the people you’re doing business with is very critical in cementing long-lasting relationships. Both China and U.S have diverse, rich and long histories and culture that have built a strong business atmosphere in the two countries. In China, relations always come before business whereas in America business comes first then relationships follow. The Chinese people transact business with people they trust and know well. They take their time interact with a potential business partner by sharing their thoughts and giving honest feedbacks.
The type of interaction is also a key difference. While the Chinese prefer face to face interactions when doing business, the United States prefers online interaction. To launch or conduct business successively in China, you need to pre-visit the country and make one-on –one interaction. To adopt the Chinese business culture, Americans, and American companies have established offices and hired local Chinese people to smooth the progress of doing business in the Chinese market. Forming partnerships with local Chinese companies is also a viable option often adored by most American companies entering the Chinese market (pan et al, 2010).
Negotiations culture in China is very different from that in the U.S. The Chinese believe that there is always a chance to haggle or bargain for a fair deal in a business transaction unlike the U.S.A culture which prescribes no room for negotiations. U.S companies should, therefore, make paddled proposal by always starting with reasonable price tags regardless of the multiple negotiations expected (Jin and Chen, 2013).
The leadership communications styles are very diverse in the two countries. While business leaders in China prefer to be reserved and quiet while doing business, the American leader tends to be eloquent and outspoken in his/her communication.
