MGT 501: Decision Making

Essay Instructions:

There are many instances where decisions are made by groups rather than by individuals. Some examples include juries, management teams, and departmental committees.  However, groups can be vulnerable to decision biases that do not affect individual decision making. In this exercise, you will be participating in week one with a small group and in week two with the class as a whole.
First, answer the following question on a scale of 1 to 8 to indicate how much you agree or disagree with the following statement.

Trident University courses have too many papers. I would much prefer a situation where we had several tests instead of having to write so many papers.
Please make an initial posting to this Discussion topic ("Group Polarization General Instructions") to confirm that you understand the directions to participate in one of two concurrent discussion groups (e.g., "I confirm that I understand the directions"). Then move on to your designated team topic below (i.e., Discussion Group A or Discussion Group B) to participate in your group assignment

Introduction
Group decision-making is a major factor that affects several areas in the society. In an analogy, a pilot has an obligation of making critical decisions that have impacts on any trip he makes. He has to make informed decisions every time he takes off, and torches’ the ground. The pilot does not solely make decisions himself but consults with the co-pilot and the people at the control towers on any judgment he has to make.
By tapping into the unique thought patterns of other persons, we can generate an array of information that can change situations. We make decisions every day, and some may be consciously or unconsciously. The only thing that determines the nature of the decisions we make is their outcomes. Right decisions generate good results while bad ones to have their consequences.
Results of the Test
The result of my test score was under 4. I extremely disagreed with the notion of taking more tests instead of writing so many papers. However after a small group discussion, my view changed, and my score turned to be 6. In any group setting, people are bound to make extreme decisions rather than at an individual basis. Being in a group affects how an individual makes decisions, a factor that influences the group’s overall performance (Tropman, 2014). A group has the capacity within it to make informed decisions geared towards achieving a high level of performance. These explain why groups are entrusted rather than individuals, with important decisions in any society.
How do judgments made by persons compare to decisions made by a group
An important factor to note in decisions made by an individual compared to those raised by a panel is, when a group interacts, a series of new ideas generated and solutions to problems found. These would not be same if an individual were to handle such a subject (Tropman, 2014). Group members are also more likely to identify and correct mistakes that can prove harmful in making sound decisions compared to an individual. Having the advantage of a collective memory is a factor that shows the fact that several minds hold very pertinent information than one.
How discussion leads groups to make good decisions or bad decisions
Decisions made in an organization have the power to intensify an individual’s position and opinions. In instances where we associate with similar people to us, the manner in which we interact strengthens our ideas. Group decisions are for this reason known to produce a pool of information and ideas as compared to individual decisions. Since people bring different ideas and arguments concerning an issue, they are p...
