Difference between current and proficient
Current and proficiency have some slight differences but are closely linked in their use. Proficiency is used to refer to increased skill in doing something with time, while current means being updated with the present development in the industry one works. Proficiency is gained through constant training where individuals get skills necessary in the industry. Through proficiency, individuals are able to increase their productivity and their reliability in the identified industry. Proficiency allows individuals to study their weaknesses and progressively work on improving their skills. It also involves the physical and mental participation of the individuals in improving their reliability in their work context. Current on the other hand, ensures that individuals are able to adapt to the changes that take place in their industry. The changes may require the individuals to change their way of thinking and thus requires application of critical thinking. Through being current, individuals are able to understand competition in their industry and thus work towards establishing competitive edge.
Whether a pilot can be proficient and not current
It is possible for a pilot to be proficient but not current depending on his level of skills gained during flying. As a pilot flies an aircraft, there are decisions that he is supposed to make in emergency situation or unfamiliar situations. These situations may be new and it requires that the pilot uses his proficiency in making such decisions. The decisions should be based on the safety of the passengers. The proficiency in the pilot can enable him to handle effectively such upcoming challenges. Past experiences may contribute to increased proficiency thus enabling pilot make effective decisions in unfamiliar circumstances. Therefore, inadequate understanding of the current situations in given circumstances cannot limit the display of competence of pilot in different situations.

A pilot can also be current but not proficiency depending on his level of exposure in the recent past in the aviation industry. A pilot may have flown an aircraft for less number of cumulative hours but the flying took place within the month. If another pilot has flown aircraft for more hours than the first one, but the last time he flew an aircraft is in a significant past then he fails to be current. The pilot who has flown for few hours but significantly within a given time can be considered to be effective to fly an aircraft at the present.
