The UTS Phase Model
Introduction
Corporate organizations recognize that many stakeholders allow them to exist. These include their customers, community, employees, shareholders, and suppliers. It is therefore vital for activities of the corporation to be sustainable both in the society and ecologically. The UTS phase model is a sustainability tool used to evaluate corporates. It consists of six stages: rejection, non-responsiveness, compliance, efficiency, strategic proactivity, and sustainable organization. Each stage has unique characteristics into which corporate activities fall into. The rejection, non-responsiveness dimensions are viewed as value diminishers; the compliance stage is a value conserver, while efficacy and strategic proactivity are seen as value creators. The main goal, however, should be for the organization to operate at the sustainable organization dimension.
The following is a case study examination of Commercial and Industrial Security Corporation (CISCO) under the lens of this tool. CISCO is an American technology company at the heart of Silicon Valley, in San Jose, California. It specializes in manufacturing and selling networking hardware, software, telecommunications gadgets, and other technology machinery. Using the UTS phase model, the following can be derived:
Rejection
Duffy (2007) published an article where the company was accused of tax evasion by importing products into Brazil. The company's legal representation denied claiming to have used middlemen instead of importing directly into the country. It is a classic example of the company focusing on profit and denying other stakeholders an opportunity to benefit from an opportunity.
Non-responsiveness
According to Iyengar (2020), the company has recently been accused of discrimination against an Indian employee in 2020 based on his lower social class. There is yet to be an official response despite the accusing party being a union advocating for fairness in the workplace.
Compliance
The company was accused of failing to comply with a public licensure procedure. The company responded by complying with the stipulated licensure terms and making a monetary contribution to its accusers (Free Software Foundation, 2008). It s...
