Multinational Corporations (MNCs) typically seek to expand their business operations in developing countries, but the process of undemocratic governments makes it difficult to have their operations done transparently. In essence, the political risk in developing countries means that MNCs have to adhere to local content requirements. However, MNCs also have huge bargaining power owing to their financial strength and repatriate most profits to their parent companies. In a global political economy context, MNCs view the world as a single entity and act to further their interest and not to develop the local economies of host countries.
To lay credence that MNCs do not improve societal development, is that technology transfer to host countries is a largely a myth.
