A few years ago, my family and I travelled to South Africa. Before this trip, my idea of Africa was a continent made up of developing countries where people go on safari. I had never been interested in travelling to Africa unless it was to go on safari. Little did I know that this trip would change my life. When we arrived at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, the capital of South Africa, I expected to be greeted by half-naked Africans like I always saw in the movies. However, the situation was different. The airport was like any other. People were arriving and departing and everyone else at the airport was busy servicing the transport of travellers.
In under 45 minutes, we were living the airport for the hotel. On the flight over, I had researched everything about South Africa so that I had an idea of the country I was visiting. I was surprised to find several videos on YouTube showing armed robbery occurrences in the country, especially on armored vehicles. My perception of South Africa, or any other African country, in that case was that the people did not have as much wealth or readily available weapons that they had to engage in armed robbery.
