OSHA (Occupation Safety and Health Administration)
Introduction:
OSHA is a well-known agency found in the United States that means, Occupational, Safety, and Health Administration. OSHA founded in 29th December 1970, by President Richard M. Nixon. It is important to note that EU-OSHA is different from OSHA.EU-OSHA is a European, Agency for safety health workers.
One day an employee suffered from a respiratory disease and became admitted to a local hospital. She later filed a complaint to OSHA that the employer had not issued the workers with respirators. She was working in a plastic manufacturing company. OSHA agents decided to pay a surprise visit and discovered that employees were working without respirators, and the area was not well ventilated.
Respiratory protection this is when an employee’s right isn't protected and exposed to health risks and dangers in their places of work. This act was a repeated violation. An employee from the same company had previously identified a similar complaint. This event was a severe breach because an individual had been affected; the company was therefore given a punishment of fine of almost $300 due to its ignorance.
Several actions and control methods can be applied to avoid such a violation. They include: Proper ventilation of the area of work. There should be enough oxygen supply. The company should purchase materials that are less toxic to minimize respiratory hazards. Employers should buy respirators that protect the employees’ respiratory system. Employers should also ensure that employees become trained on how to use the respirators to enable efficient use. It is well stated in the book by Hagan, & O'Reilly,. (2001)
There should be supervision of the general maintenance of the respirators. The employees working under such risks should undergo medical evaluation. The operation of that area must be made confined.
Conclusion: We learn that respiratory protection violation is a far-reaching offence as it can cause severe respiratory illness to a worker or even death. Employers must strive to maintain respiratory health by purchasing respirators and ensuring proper ventilation. This well documented by the author Young, D. J. (1989) in his book.
