Formal & Informal organization
Each organization has a formal structure, that people typically adhere to, but they may also be an informal structure. The relationships in the workplace and processes define whether an organization is formal or informal. The formal organization is the visible, legitimate and official part of an organization (Nelson & Quick, 2013). As such, it relates to an organizational hierarchical structure, work processes and organization chart. On the other hand, the informal organization is the unofficial part of an organization that often develops through informal working relations and may influence the work culture. There is a need to understand both formal and informal elements in an organization, as conflicts may arise, highlighting the need to solve such conflicts before they escalate further and result to a breakdown in communication.
The problem of workplace conflict cans often be analyzed by looking at the formal and informal organization. In the USN, courage, honor and commitment are the main principles upon which major decisions are made. Nonetheless, there are situations that are more complex and require better communication in order to avoid conflict. The values displayed in the organization have helped to informal decisions involving workplace conflict with a male colleague. The values had been valuable to reduce further conflict, since other colleagues have often reiterated the importance of these values, and this makes it easier to engage with the other party. In any case, sharing the same values means that the feuding parties have a starting point, people working in organizations where values are simply put in writing but are not full followed.
To highlight on the interplay between the formal and informal organizations, is the need to adhere to the values to guide in taking actions and decisions. As such, even in the informal organizations elevating the values has played an important role to rewards improving elations with colleagues. In any case, paying attention to the informal organization often helps improve performance and organizational effectiveness. I found it easier to connect emotionally by paying attention to the values, but learning to connect emotionally after conflict takes time. Hence, integrating elements of an informal organization with formal organizations helps to energize the informal organization.
