Part one
I worked in a company with several branches in major cities across the United States. I refused to work in other company branches except at the head office during a reshuffle. This company was centrally managed from the head office. The company president did not delegate most duties and signed and controlled the implementation of all the policies, including those local to certain branches. I was lucky to work in the head office, where I enjoyed the support of the top company administrators. This was advantageous compared to those who worked in other branches.
The job contract included benefits like transport, health and meals during one's shifts. However, it was not easy to access these benefits. In most cases, the company wanted the employees to use their means which are then compensated in the end. For example, employees used their transport means and paid for a decent meal. This was against the terms in the contract, which promised upfront payment of these services. But somehow, people in the head office did not complain, maybe because most can afford to use their means and wait for the salary and the compensation. Workers in other branches were uncomfortable with the arrangement leading others to resign. I lived blocks away from the head office, which placed me in an advantageous position.
When the reshuffle was done, I refused to move to a branch in another town because it would inconvenience me. I would have to spend extra on housing, transport and meals, yet the company did not seem to take these issues seriously. This made me resist organizational change.
Part two
Several reasons contributed to my resistance to the change proposed in the organization. They included non-commitment of the company to the contract terms, poor communication strategy, lack of employee involvement in decision making, weak company support system, and surprise policy and responsibility changes.
Although it paid all the workers, the company I worked for was not committed to the timeliness of the terms stated in the contract. The salaries were always delayed by a day or two while the benefits were disbursed on unpredictable dates. People who entirely depended on the benefits were inconvenienced because the company disbursed the money almost a month later. Those who remained in the company had alternative sources of income or were favoured by their proximity to the offices like I was. Shifting to a different branch would inconvenience me, yet I did not have any assurance from the company that...
