Robert Reich contends that there is an increasing conflict between capitalism and democracy. As citizens, people have ideals, but as consumers, they have needs. The development of technology and increasing dynamic economy set the ground for corporate competition involving in politics. Currently, organizations compete with each other and fight for regulations and laws that favor them while put their competitors at risks. Such pressures create in difficult for people to enjoy meaningful public policy. Economy had developed immensely whereby global capitalism has turned into super-capitalism. Whereas super-capitalism works better to develop the economic sector, democracy entrusted to care all citizens has turned less efficient under its influence. People always search for cheaper products because consumer culture has built great pressure on price. Organizations are desperately trying to satisfy the demands of consumers with supply of cheaper products. Consumers and businesses are driven by greed and survival of the fittest. Laws are passed but do not play their roles. Corruption and bribery are still used to achieve intended goals. Consumers are responsible for the evils brought by business organizations.
Part 2
Rodney Dangerfield is attending his first economics class. Dangerfield’s personality interrupts the professor claiming that the professor is left out of the factors to be considered when building a factory. Dangerfield claims that issues like working with the unions, bribing the local politicians and others as also necessary considerations when building a company. The implication here is that the red tape has been developed by the same principles and rules, which capitalistic system has created. The professor’s building may cost more than what Dangerfield expected, may take longer to construct or may never get constructed.
