In recent years, a growing number of companies have come to develop gender equality and diversity policies. Informed by emerging social and cultural changes and pressured by regulatory entities, employers are finding increasingly difficult not catering for gender and diversity issues at workplace. Unsurprisingly, sexual and racial discrimination laws, regulations and polices are gaining more ground as increasingly critical prerequisites for employers to establish credibility, fairness and openness among a wide range of stakeholders including, primarily, existing and prospective employees, regulatory entities and community at large. There are, in fact, as many such laws and polices as companies are. Indeed, corporate gender and diversity policies vary among companies according to a variety of internal organizational factors and external market dynamics. Specifically, whilst companies operating at a global scale employ workers coming form diverse backgrounds in diverse cultural and social contexts, smaller companies operating only locally are bound only by local cultural and social specifics – at least in so far as regulation is concerned. For current purposes, a case of a fictional company, XYZ, employing 15 workers is used in order to develop a gender and diversity policy.
Initially, an overarching framework of any proposed gender and diversity policy at XYZ should be established. This framework should, essentially, define major policy guidelines XYZ should have in place in order to ensure company's employees do not only abide by any existing laws and bylaws but also to give an ideal role example for peers, industry and community at large.
