Since flying involves a fair number of risks, one of the reasons for becoming a commercial “level” pilot is develop skill obviously, but to learn best practices associated with episodes of risk.

You will be presented with 10 “real-life” episodes, each seeking your response.  Describe the best countermeasures that you as a pilot can use to mitigate these risks. 

The 10 reality episodes are worth 300 points total, maximum 30 points each.  While this is not an APA style research paper, it does need to encompass organization, style with definite direction and flow to a conclusion.   See syllabus for due dates.

Each response must encompass a minimum of two pages (font: 11; line spacing “multiple” 1.15) and clearly present the problem and explain the best-practice countermeasure, documenting your answer.  This is not an opinion paper.  Please see the rubric for this assignment.

Generally, a good landing begins before the aircraft’s wheel touches the ground. Evidence suggests that more than 30% of all aviation accidents involving non-commercial aircrafts take place during the phase of landing, thus highlighting the importance of maintaining a good, consistent and safe approach (AOPA, 2014). Unstabilized approaches are considered as some of the leading factors in takeoff-landing accidents, and this includes those that involve controlled flight into terrain (CFIT). If the flight crew conducts an approach when there is insufficient time to plan, prepare, and conduct an approach that is stabilized, it often increases the risk of accidents (Wilson & Binnema, 2014). According to aerobics instructor Jonathan Rotondo, to enhance a good landing, the pilot should consider various factors that he is dealing. This includes the nature of the airstrip, wind, temperature and how he is generally feeling so that when anything pops up, either a mile or half a mile to the landing, he can have a plan or an exit strategy.
Statistics from the Federal Aviation Administration show that stabilized approaches, that is, those conducted either high/fast or low/slow, were the causal factor in 66% of the 76 takeoff-and-landings accidents across the world between 1984 and 1997 (FAA, 2009). It has also been argued that low-energy approaches (low/slow) makes a pilot to lose control of the aircraft while CFIT is caused by inadequate awareness of the vertical position.
