Assessment entails “the collection of information about employees using a number of methods and providing them with feedback about their values, skills, communication styles or behaviours (Noe, 2010)”. It is used to identify managers who are competent enough to achieve high executive positions, which in turn promote the overall performance of the company. Most importantly, it is useful in identifying individual colleagues’ weaknesses and strengths, their decision processes or communication patterns that may be hindering productivity of the team. There are different kinds of assessments that include personality assessments, work behaviour assessment, not forgetting the crucial job performance assessment. These assessments may then be used to set targets for the employees.
It is recorded that personality assessment is an important predictor of job performance (Noe, 2010)”.There are numerous personality assessments tools used by Human Resource Personnel on employees, but the main ones include NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R), Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MTBI) and DISC. NEO PI-R measures five factors known as The Big Five factors of personality. The factors are; adjustment, agreeableness, conscientiousness, extroversion and openness to experience. According to (Noe, 2010) Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is the mostly used tool to test for employee development. It consists of questions about how the employee feels or would behave in different situations. Peoples’ preferences in interpersonal communication, information gathering and decision-making influenced their behaviours. Lastly, DiSC classifies the aspects of behaviour into four; steadiness, influence, conscientiousness and dominance. It is mostly used to test for leadership in employees.
