A veteran is any person who served on active duty in any job capacity while a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard active components, or of the National Guard or Reserves, and not dishonorably discharged.
I agree that disabled veterans should get preferential treatment over better-qualified candidates who are not disabled veterans because of their Leadership and Teamwork SkillsLeadership the most common cited reason for preferring veterans according to a report from companies who employ veterans. Veteran Military service members have shown that they can work in a hierarchical team-based organization as leaders, followers and team members. They have experience working in task-oriented teams that have required them to design work plans that capitalize on the strengths of team members, accommodate team member weaknesses and adjust as team members. These skill sets were highly prized by the companies who happen to employ veterans mentioned by the majority of organizations, and these comments occurred consistently across organizations of all sizes and in organizations that target veterans in hiring (Veteran Affairs, 2008).
Moreover, Veterans’ Character Makes Them GoodEmployees as almost half of the organizations who employed Veterans observed that the character of veterans including their trustworthy and dependable nature, their integrity and their maturity increases their appeal as employees. For example, one interviewee asserted that veterans are dependable, more mature for their age, with better than average attitudes. Companies also perceive veterans as less likely to use drugs.
Companies Seek Veterans’ Expertise as more than one-third of the companies interviewed hire veterans specifically for their expertise. Essentially, even those companies that do not explicitly target veterans for hiring reported that veterans often have the skills the companies require, such as logistics or technical specialties. Other companies value the security clearance that veterans typically bring from their military experience. Some of the defense companies interviewedhires veterans who possess hands-on military experience with that company’s products. Still others hire veterans because of their understanding of the military environment, stating for example: Across the board, many of our customers are in the military (Leiter, 2011).
