Introduction
Leeds Music College started off as a Music centre fifteen years ago. It was offering various musical activities for the town. The centre became a college ten years ago before shifting to its present location and establishing itself as Leeds Music College. The only specialist United Kingdom conservatoire to provide both postgraduate and undergraduate and further education studies, the college offers a special opportunities for students who desire to move from BTEC courses through postgraduate and undergraduate degrees. Leeds Music College has also entered into a strategic partnership with one of the Music colleges in the UK for purposes of enhancing its position as a centre of distinction for music education. The college has been keen in ensuring that it keeps its operations up-to-date in order to ensure that the college adapts the new technological advances which are always coming up.
Goals of Leeds Music College
The college was getting closer to the end of an E-learning revamp which brought about the execution of a contemporary Virtual Learning Environment to enhance access to learning and teaching resources for lecturers and students. As part of this progression, the officer in charge of E-learning was keen to merge a number of screencasts around the usage of music software.
A screencast refers to a digital recording of computer output, also referred to as video screen capture. It normally contains audio narration. A screencast is in essence a movie of changes that a user sees on a screen, improved with audio narration (Notess, 2012). Screencasts can be made with numerous tools and are usually used to make tutorials or showcase student’s subject mastery. Screencasts are bendy tools suitable for a number of learning set-ups and digital media forms. They can offer refined learning experiences, incorporating images, slides, audio, video, subtitles, screen annotations, interactive quizzes and many more (Booth, 2012).
By using screencasts to exhibit basic proficiencies in the use of ordinary software products like Sibelius and Logic Studio, the E-learning officer hoped to give teaching staff more time for more thorough one-on-one teaching. The officer also identified a prospect to use screencasting to encourage and promote use of the VLE itself. Furthermore, the students would be able to showcase their expertise when playing their music or learning chords (Reich & Daccord, 2015).
