Week 5     Student Worksheet
This week there are a number of activities for you to do before coming to your tutorial. One of the best ways to understand great speechwriting and delivery is to watch, listen and critically analyse.
BEFORE CLASS
Read the text chapter on writing speeches and the summary lecture notes.
Watch some, or all of these noted speeches
o the Noel Pearson Noel Pearson Eulogy for Whitlam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsXmYHiuJ8s
o President Obama delivers Eulogy                          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9IGyidtfGI
o J K Rowling commencement speech https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHGqp8lz36c
Questions:
Why do you think these speeches work?
What do you think were the objectives of the speeches? Were they to inform, persuade, call to action or celebrate?
What is the key message and strategy?
What are the most outstanding features of the language used?
What features of the speaker’s delivery had the most impact on you?
Write notes of your answers to these questions to bring to class.
Internet research
In constructing the introduction to a speech a writer might use humour, examples, stories or illustrations, shocking statements or facts, statistics, questions, quotations, suspense, personal reference, or combinations of these.
Look online for other speeches, for example in TED talks that illustrate some of these forms of introduction. Be prepared to be called on in class to share your examples.
IN CLASS
Writing Speeches
Draft a short speech. For the class exercise this can be just a 2 to 3 minute speech (300 to 500 words). However short, the first step should be to consider the objective and sketch an outline. What will the key messages be?
OPTION 1:  The speech will be presented at a national universities student forum to be held in Canberra in September. The speech will be delivered by a student from UTS and should focus on issues or challenges currently facing university students. It will raise awareness of these issues and may present a ‘call to action’.
OPTION 2:  Free choice – a speech about a subject of your own choice. You will need to indicate who is giving the speech and who the intended audience is when you post this online (or submit it for assignment 2.1).
In groups of 2-3 have your class mate read your draft speech aloud. Listen to how it sounds? Is this what you expected when you wrote it? Provide each other with constructive feedback on:
o The structure of the speech
o Strength of argument
o Stylistic techniques used
o How they may better engage the audience
Please post your draft speech on UTS Online.
If you are submitting this tutorial for Assessment 1 part 1 you need to write a 500 word speech (approx 3 to 5 minutes).Speech writers also need to consider the audience and the speaker – who is the intended audience and who will be delivering the speech – include a sentence explaining this when you submit.

With the increasing need for physical fitness, football is a great sport as it promotes cardiovascular health (Victoria State Government, 2014). Players spent about 90 minutes in a single match, making football a good workout session. Also, football promotes endurance and flexibility. Most football players have bone strength since they are always on the move while playing the game.
