Project Proposal Guidelines
A research proposal is a phase in the research process that clarifies the problem, purpose, directions and approaches of a study. It demonstrates your team’s abilities in scholarly inquiry, analysis and writing, but also adds knowledge to the field. A good research proposal will answer the following questions (Maxwell, 2005):
• What do readers need to know to better understand your topic?
• What do readers need to know about your topic?
• What do you propose to study?
• What is the setting, and who are the people you will study?
• What methods do you plan to use to collect data?
• How will you analyze the data?
• How will you validate your findings?
• What does your background research show about the practicability and value of the proposed study?
• What ethical issues will your study present?
Your research proposal should build on your existing research as well as the activities we have conducted in class. Your review should make reference to in-class texts as well as external texts, particularly in relation to discussion about the specific methods your study will use (minimum 2-3 scholarly texts per method used).
Minimum sample sizes per method used (for groups of 4-5):

1. Is the purpose of the survey stated?
2. Are the reasons for choosing the design mentioned?
3. Is the population and its size mentioned?
4. Will the population be stratified? If so how?
5. How many people will be in the sample? On what basis was this size chosen?
6. What will be the procedure for sampling these individuals (e.g. random, nonrandom)?
7. What instrument will be used in the survey? Who developed the instrument?
8. What are the content areas addressed in the survey? The scales?
9. What procedure will be used to pilot or field-test the survey?
10. What is the timeline for administering the survey?
11. What are the variables in the study?
12. How do these variables cross-reference with the research questions and items on the survey?
What specific steps will be taken in data analysis to do the following:
a) Analyze returns?
b) Check for response bias?
c) Conduct a descriptive analysis?
d) How will the results be interpreted?
• Quantitative phase
o Population, sample, and participants (Survey or content analysis)
If conducting research with human subjects, include information on access and recruitment
o Quantitative data collection (name independent, dependent, mediating, and control variables)
o Quantitative data analysis procedures (methods & tools/software used)
• References (12-15 covering updated Lit Review + 2-3 scholarly texts per method outlined + all other sources used in the submission)
• Appendices
Instruments (including final litertaure view chart & map), protocols, consent forms (ie form 5, as well as forms 1, 2 and 7), timeline with internal & external deadlines
Each assignment should include an appendix detailing the contributions made by each group member. This should include meetings attended, sections written, data analyzed, etc.
The research project is considered exploratory research. All research is original (primary research) and it is unlikely that anyone will have conducted a study like yours before.
