Rehabilitation Counselors
Rehabilitation counselors’ daily tasks include providing individual counseling to help clients such as those with substance abuse, mental problems or emotional problems. They also develop treatment plans for clients or provide referrals to other specialist (ONET Online, 2018). They arrange for clients to receive other services such as career training and also maintain records of their clients.
The education required to be a rehabilitation counselor is a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling or a related field. A person has to also licensing from one’s State Licensing Board. To be licensed, one must have a master’s degree and do 2,000 to 4,000 hours of supervised clinical training (ONET Online, 2018). Other states require one to have certification from Rehabilitation Counselor Certification.
The need for rehabilitation counseling is on the rise. The main areas where this career is prevalent is among veterans and people with disabilities. Also the corrections department require many people who need rehabilitation counseling (ONET Online, 2018).
One of the most interesting aspect of this career is that groups of elderly people is on the rise and so rehabilitation counseling is necessary. Many elderly need support and counseling and so there is likely no shortage of work in this career field. Further, it is evident that the counselors have over the recent past started working with people with learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorders (What Does, 2018).
The questions I would ask someone in this field is: - Do you find yourself getting emotionally involved or feeling sorry for the people that you counsel? What is the highest level of promotion can you achieve in this career field? How many hours a week does career counselors do at work?
After this research, I feel interested in this career field. This is because I have always wanted to work in some level of counseling and assisting vulnerable individuals. I feel that this career would offer me a chance to do so.
