The current reforms within the healthcare sector are critically important in achieving the healthcare goals of quality, accessibility and affordable care for all. Effective use of information technology within the primary care setting to facilitate quality improvement is the best strategy recommended to deliver high-quality care and improve patient health outcomes. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 supports the integration of information technology as an effective means to improve patient safety, minimize medical errors and provide a patient-centered care.
Different types of technologies and tools are used in the healthcare settings to support quality improvement initiatives. IT tools are used for measuring, tracking, sharing healthcare information and monitoring clinical workflow processes (Sheikh, Sood & Bates, 2015). Some IT tools enhance care coordination, reducing costs and improving health outcomes. Technological tools including, registries, order entry, Health information exchange, Electronic Health Records medical, imaging information systems are commonly used within the healthcare facilities (Burwell, 2015). The three most important electronic health records systems are the Health information exchange, Registries, and Electronic Health Records.
Electronic Health Records facilitates quick exchange of patients' information and used for basic data collection, extraction, tracking, and analysis. EHR assists practitioners to access patient's data to make timely decisions (Sheikh, Sood & Bates, 2015). Data registry record patient information, including, the health status and treatment received within a specific period. Registry focuses on patients with common reasons for health care (Sheikh, Sood & Bates, 2015).
The clinical data registry contains important information like patient population, and for each patient population, the health care providers can review available treatment options. By reviewing the many aspects of population patterns, specific outcomes can be easily be predicted (Sheikh, Sood & Bates, 2015). The registry allows health care providers understand the treatment response of patients. Registries are useful to both patient and healthcare professional because information generated from it facilitate accurate diagnosis and treatment (Sheikh, Sood & Bates, 2015).
Electronic health information exchange is among the important tools used for increase care coordination, allowing nurses, pharmacists, doctors and other health care providers access and share patients’ data electronically. This tool offers faster, safer, cost-effective means of delivering quality patient care (Massoudi et al, 2016).
