According to Anderson (2011), "sports associate boys and men with masculine dominance by constructing their identities and sculpting their bodies to align with hegemonic perspectives of masculinist embodiment and expression" (p. 250). It was difficult for boys and men to excel in this field after openly discussing their sexual orientation because society somewhat requires male athletes to exhibit a man's characteristics. "Boys [in sports] learn early that to be gay, to be suspected of being gay, or even to be unable to prove one's heterosexual status is not accepted" (Anderson, 2011, p.251). Worse was when the players belonged to a team with a heteronormativity culture or when they had to go to a school that strongly admonishes homosexuality.
