Introduction
In college, students with a perfect physique, stamina, and body built are advised to join the school’s varsity program. Once a student is accepted as one of the official varsity members of a certain event, they will soon start their athletic responsibilities. However, the problem is that student athletes are not usually given the right amount of allowance. This makes it hard for the student athletes to balance their school and personal lives (Gregory, 2017). Examples are working after class hours, especially for students who belong below the poverty line. No wonder why other schools face protests initiated by students who weren’t paid.
The paper’s statement asks should college athletes be paid. It seeks to find out why college athletes should be paid by their respective schools. Student athletes always pay the price for being exposed to a series of having numerous physical stresses. This is especially for student athletes who are engaged into contact sports. Examples are basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, athletics, rugby, football, polo sports, and net ball that require an extreme physical activity.
With the definition of the problem, student athletes lack finances to pay for their basic needs such as food, rent, and medical expenses. Student athletes represent their schools during local, national, or international sporting events. The athlete is able to show his athletic skills while representing their school as a brand. This is a problem affecting the student athletes because their dedication sometimes consumes their time for their family and studies. Student athletes are usually at risk for failing in their grades due to these unfortunate treatments by schools who wants to use them for profit taking through ticket sales and live streaming.
The problem needs solving because student athletes deserve a better treatment by their schools. Athletes are already promoting the brand of their school whenever there are athletic events, which the students will represent their school. In every event, there is a significant gathering that takes place. This is especially when the school becomes one of the semifinalists or even up to the finalist in the local community. When there is a huge volume of crowd just to attend the sporting event, they generate a significant amount of profits for the school as well as to the event organizer of the sporting activity.
As for the potential solution, student athletes should be paid by allocating another form of wage benefits that will be included in their contract. The student...
