During the six months I worked as a literacy lead and program coordinator, my goal was to double the number of services provided to offset the absence of services due to the Covid-19 pandemic. I successfully provided direct tutoring support within our in-person reading centers and in our remote tutoring system for distance tutoring.
Tracking Progress
I tracked progress by focusing on targeted students needing more individualized instruction, especially in a distance learning environment. I was responsible for the entire community and partnership development. Additionally, I created positive relationships and interacted extensively with parents and caregivers. It included an intensive, hands-on approach to an educational program that works. The role consisted of external relations, acting ambassadors for service, demonstrating a passion for tutoring elementary school students, and firmly believing in and promoting Reading Partners’ vision and values of service. I managed to establish a solid ability to shift and adapt to this role based on how individual school environments operated under Covid-19 limitations and guidelines. Ultimately, I was able to provide more than 230 one-on-one direct tutoring sessions and concomitantly coordinated and oversaw approximately an additional 400 remote online literacy tutoring sessions to target at-risk learners at DCPS Elementary Schools in SE and NW Washington, DC.
Further, I was responsible for the leadership of direct tutoring at each school site, as well as the management of day-to-day, in-person tutoring. Here I supervised a few staff from non-AmeriCorps tutors who were not able to work in my absence or without my close supervision since they needed the essential security clearances. I actively oversaw the daily tutoring operations of an evidence-based literacy intervention curriculum and associated activities for K-4th graders. These activities included initiating and developing after-school care programs to meet school needs and RP goals.
