In the recent past, the field of higher education has been flocked with several modes of giving instructions. Massive open online courses are one of the models that higher education is utilizing to offer the myriad courses. This mode of education emanated from the need of the masses to access higher education from farfetched areas without having to travel long distances so as to save on time and the ultimate cost. This paper analyses the effects of those Massive open online courses in view of their negative and positive impacts felt in the world over.
Positive impacts
Massive open online courses have enabled the parties involved (the tutors and the students) to attend to the classes from long distances where they would otherwise require to travel long distances. The tutors and the students are able to access reading material online; in the click of a button.
Massive open online courses enable the tutors and the students to work at their own individual pace. This is unlike the physical tutoring whereby, the student has to keep to the pace of the tutor as well as the pace of the other students. With the online courses, the tutor can put the materials for the students online, at the time he has access to internet and not at an exact time that he needs to be at a classroom/ tutorial hall. The students too, are able to access the materials at their own time. For instance, one can do other activities at day time and choose to access the learning materials at night.
According to Seaton, Bergner, Chuang et al (2014) this model of education is enlisting positive impact in the society by enabling the people who would otherwise not make it to the usual tutoring, achieve their desired level of education. These include; the people who are far from the areas offering a particular course, people with busy schedules such as those engaging in business as well as the disabled people who would find it cumbersome to travel every now and then to attend classes. Again the adults, who would not feel comfortable sitting in the same class with students of the age of their children or grand children, have found it easier to advance their education through the massive open online courses.
