Hooray for Hat by Brian Wong
The short story I taught to kindergarten kids is Hooray for Hat by Brian Wong. Wong writes stories for children using visual illustrations, such as drawings. Before reading the story, I did a little research of my own to understand how illustrations are used to communicate to the audience, especially young children. When children see a picture, they believe that it is of a real thing. The use of different colors can have different meanings, such as using bright colors to express happy moments, and dark colors to express sad moments. I considered the various colors that Wong uses in the story so I’ll be able to explain to the children how the changing of colors corresponds with the moods of the animals in the story. Similarly, I understand that children love stories about animals. Therefore, I chose a story with animal characters so as to create interest in the children. In addition, I ensured that the story has a simple plot for the children’s easy understanding. One more reason I chose Wong’s Hooray for Hat is because it has more illustrations and few words. The use of visuals is helpful for children because of pictures compensate for their limited language skills.
Before reading the story, I taught of the animals that are commonly used for children’s stories or cartoons, and realized that most of them are either domestic animals that they see at home or wild animals they are familiar with. I made a point to ask the children if they know or have seen any of the animals in the story either at home, on TV, or in a national park. I wanted to have a good understanding of the story so that I will be able to teach to the children better, and I made sure I have a dictionary at and to get the different meaning of some confusing or difficult words. While reading the story on my own before presenting it to the class I noted the way the writer uses colors when moving from one scene to another, which involved the changing of the animals’ moods from being grumpy to cheerful. I made points on how I will help the children to understand the story and its meaning by observing the use of dark and bright colors in different scenes.
During the Reading
During the reading, I started by greeting the children and introducing myself. I asked them how they were doing. All responded that they were fine, and I asked them whether being fine also meant they were happy. They said yes they were happy. I asked them how many were happy when they woke up in the morning, and they all raised their hands. I then told them that I was going to read them a story about happiness and friendship. I asked them if they have friends, and if they shared anything with their friends. They all said the things they shared, such as snacks. To capture the children’s interest, I told them the story is about a friend who shared all his presents with his friends, and how it made all ...
