Week 1: Introduction to Teaching Reading
Reading is a fundamental life skill and one that is essential to growing the ability of a child to better understand and interact with their environment (Henry, 2010). Because of this, it clearly emerges that the process through which children learn to read must be carefully monitored and methodically progressed in order to provide the child with the best opportunity to learn. Because of this, the manner in which the child is taught how to read is just as important as what the child is reading.
While the developmental processes of learning in children are quite understandable, how children interact with certain material or respond to specific experiences varies greatly from one child to another (Konza, 2006). Because of this, I feel that the question “how will you teach children to read” pushes me to consider my capabilities in teaching and how effective I can be as a teacher. Because of this, this question makes me feel two distinct ways. First, it challenges me to continue improving my skills as an educator and my understanding of children’s learning and cognitive processes.
