By Definition, Natural selection refers to the natural procedure where the biological elements of an organism are capable or incapable of adapting in a given population. This is caused by the effect of biological traits that are inherited or acquired through their interaction from the immediate environment. Natural selection is the main factor in evolution. This term was made famous by Darwin who came up with the concept of natural evolution in an attempt to compare it with artificial selection. Stated differently, natural selection is a concept derived from Darwin’s evolution theory where organisms that are capable of adapting well to their environment survive and increase in number. Those with less adaptable traits are subsequently eliminated (Fisher, 2005).
The biological traits that enable organisms to adapt well in a given environment are inheritable, that is they can be passed on from one generation to the next. Traits that appears advantageous to these organisms will ultimately become predominant in a particular population. In essence, the natural environment where an organism dwells selects traits that are advantageous to their reproductive systems. As such, it results into natural and gradual alterations of biological traits of these organisms to suit their environmental settings and changes, a factor, which is termed as life evolution (Eisley, 2006).
In the modern perspective, natural selection influences the observable features or phenotype of an organism. However, the genotype in most cases is the one that is inherited. An organization’s phenotype is a consequence of its genotype as well as its immediate environmental setting (Fisher, 2005). This translates that natural selection is a continuous process, which happens in all phases of an organism’s life. This is because the environmental features themselves are ever changing and biological traits have to fit these changes for an organism to surv...
