As one of the special education personnel on campus, you have been asked to plan and facilitate a motivating 20-minute parent activity that will result in more parents becoming involved with students with special needs either on campus or with their own child at home.

Option 2: Paraprofessional Communication Activity

 

Recently, you have noticed the general and special education teachers and the paraprofessional at your school have been duplicating efforts or expecting one of the others to carry out certain classroom activities. You have been tasked with clarifying the general and special education teachers and paraprofessional roles and responsibilities.

Create a checklist to help you develop a plan for setting the initial expectations of the working conditions and responsibilities among the general education teacher, special education teacher, and paraprofessional.

Increasing parent involvement with students with special needs students
Students with disabilities whether at home or in school need a lot of attention from their parents or guardians. Unfortunately, many parents have delegated the entire responsibility of taking care of such students to teachers and paraprofessionals. This creates a gap especially because there is a role that can only be played by parents in the lives of such students. These children need motivation, parental love and care so that they can get an assurance that they have a place in the family. Such students when left without any parental attention tend to focus so much on their disabilities. They begin to feel out of place which might lead to low self-esteem.
Such involvements also help the parents understand the challenges faced by the children in school as well as the hiccups the teachers and the paraprofessionals encounter during their involvements with the students. Therefore such involvements are not only a motivation to children, but also to teachers and paraprofessionals. Parents get to understand that their case is not an isolated case especially when they see other children with disabilities studying together with their children. This forum is also geared towards educating parents on three main areas of their children’s life. According to Reynolds & Fletcher-Janzen (2002), teaching the parents on how to get involved in directly affecting the performance of their children, Then, how to get involved in their children’s learning activities. And finally, skills, techniques and strategies that can be used at home to improve the child’s development as a future responsible adult in the society.
All these reasons informed our decision to have all parents with disabled children attend an open house forum in our campus. As one of the special education personnel in campus, I endeavored to articulately design a twenty minute program that would motivate more parents to get involved with children with disabilities in school or with their own children at home.
