What did you learn that could affect your professional practices/responses when dealing with students, families, and communities in poverty?
One of the things I learned was that I have to look beyond the smile, the mood swings, the tantrums that kids throw. Apparently, children communicate in many languages and what adults call ‘acting out’ could be a way the children are expressing a certain need or want in their lives. Even when it comes to adults, one has to look beyond what they do and how their personality is to understand how and why they exhibit the character they exhibit. People may not be willing to share their problems at first and will hide in all they can find including smiles and fake lifestyles. Many people do not want it to be known that they are struggling in life or with something else. Therefore, they will don different faces and accord themselves with different characters which will help to conceal that simple fact. However, in the resources provided, especially the video clips, I am reminded that smiles, clothes, etc. should be ignored if the goal is to fight poverty.
Another thing I learned especially when it comes to children is to imagine that which they are not saying directly. In the clip titled Standing Up to Poverty, the narrator says “look what they tell me, imagine what they are not.” While this could be taken as just a cleverly concocted line, it is not. This line is quite deep and is directly challenging parents, teachers, guardians, and friends to look beyond what the children are not saying out loud.
