Guidance and counseling involves utilization of several skills which aid in achievement of the indented goals of the service. One of the skills embraced is the skill of silence. Many people have had a wrong perception that guidance and counseling involve talking throughout the session. Contrary to this, silence is a crucial part that helps to articulate the intentions in guidance and counseling.
Kuntze, Van der Molen & Born (2009) observe that; silence is a difficult skill to master in the guidance and counseling field. Although many people regard silence of the counselee as emanating from the failure of the counselor, this is not always the case. Sometimes the counselee may take moments of silence to internalize the essence of the words of the counselor.
Robertson (2013) notes that; Silence in guidance and counseling takes different shapes. For instance, there could be short pauses in between the conversation. This kind of silence should be utilized by the counselor to diagnose the reaction of the counselee. During such pauses the counselor can learn a lot from the physical expressions of the counselee.
Another form of the silence is the long silence that may be a way of expression of the counselee. The counselor should make efforts to decipher the meaning of the long silence. It could be from satisfaction or failure to understand something.
