Academic writing requires the scholar to consume others' work and come up with something new and original out of it. A scholar needs to crystallize existing literature and form new original ideas out of it. Therefore, the very nature of academic writing is to build on what others have come up with. Because it is inevitable to use other scholars' ideas, work, and words, you must acknowledge them in your writing. Acknowledging the work of other scholars is maintaining academic integrity. Any academic work that lacks academic integrity is considered plagiarized, which attracts various penalties. In some cases, if a professional is found to have committed an academic crime, he/she can lose his/her accreditation and or license. All academic institutions have policies designed to ensure that all students/scholars observe academic writing rules and produce original ideas without plagiarizing.
An explanation for the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics
Professional practice is the use of one’s knowledge in a particular profession for which he/she is trained and was tutored. Acquiring knowledge for the specific profession necessitates the individual to undergo an educational program created and regulated by a professional body. The professional's training requires taking various research activities presented for evaluation to determine their theoretical understanding of the necessary knowledge to work in the profession. In most institutions that offer professional courses, they administer examinations and require the students to conduct scientific research to develop new original ideas.
