Adoption of New Technology Systems

Essay Instructions:

As a nurse, you can have a great impact on the success or failure of the adoption of EHRs. It is important for nurses to understand their role as change agents and the ways they can influence others when addressing the challenges of changing to a drastically different way of doing things.
Everett Rogers, a pioneer in the field of the diffusion of innovations, identified five qualities that determine individual attitudes towards adopting new technology (2003). He theorized that individuals are concerned with:
Relative advantage: The individual adopting the new innovation must see how it will be an improvement over the old way of doing things.
Compatibility with existing values and practices: The adopter must understand how the new innovation aligns with current practices.
Simplicity: The adopter must believe he or she can easily master the new technology; the more difficult learning the new system appears, the greater the resistance that will occur.
Trialability: The adopter should have the opportunity to ‘play around’ with the new technology and explore its capabilities.
Observable results: The adopter must have evidence that the proposed innovation has been successful in other situations
For this Assignment, you assume the role of a nurse facilitator in a small hospital in upstate New York. You have been part of a team preparing for the implementation of a new electronic health records system. Decisions as to the program that will be used have been finalized, and you are now tasked with preparing the nurses for the new system. There has been an undercurrent of resistance expressed by nurses, and you must respond to their concerns. You have a meeting scheduled with the nurses 1 week prior to the training on the new EHR system. Consider how you can use the five qualities outlined by Rogers (2003) to assist in preparing the nurses for the upcoming implementation.
To complete:
Write a 3- to 5-page paper which includes the following:
Consider how you would present the new EHR system to the nurses to win their approval.
Reflect on the five qualities outlined by Rogers. How would addressing each of those areas improve the likelihood of success?
Using Rogers’ (2003) theory as a foundation, outline how you would approach the meeting with the nurses. Be specific as to the types of information or activities you could provide to address each area and include how you would respond to resistance.
Analyze the role of nurses as change agents in facilitating the adoption of new technology.

Adoption of New Technology Systems
It is always a challenge to implement change within an organization because most people do not like coming out of their comfort zones. Those with the responsibility of implementing change should be ready to deal with resistance and ensure that everyone embraces the changes that are being implemented at the organization (Grol & Wensing, 2004). This essay will highlight the implementation of a new electronic health records system in a small hospital in Upstate New York. As a nurse facilitator in the implementation of this project, it is important to present the new EHR system to nurses in the best way possible in order to win their approval.
To begin with, the nurses should take ownership of the project and be made aware that the changes are for their own good and are therefore not meant to intimidate anyone. It is also important for the facilitator to assure them that their jobs are secure (Hong & Kim, 2002). It is also a good idea for the facilitator to explain to them all the details about the new project and how it is going to affect the company for them to be psychologically prepared. The presentation should be done in stages in a language they understand until everyone gets all the details. It is important to create enthusiasm among the nurses as you present the project to them in order to reduce the level of resistance (Hong & Kim, 2002). This is important especially during the first meeting with the nurses because the first impression about the project is always very important. All the nurses should be involved in the entire process and be given an opportunity to ask questions. The facilitator should be willing to answer all questions even if they may appear too obvious.
The individual attitudes of nurses towards the adoption of the new Electronic Health Records systems will depend on how the facilitator will handle the entire process. According to Rogers (2003), there are up to five qualities that will determine the attitude of nurses towards adopting this new technology. To begin with, the facilitator should ensure that the nurses understand the relative advantage that comes with adopting the new system. They should be able to see how the new system is actually an improvement on the existing system. Every organization has its own values and practices that all employees are normally familiar with (Rogers, 2003). The facilitator should explain to the nurses how the new way of doing things is compatible with the existing organizational practices and values in order to avoid resistance. The other important quality in determining the attitude towards adopting new innovation is simplicity.
The facilitator should ensure that the presentation is as simple as possible for all the nurses to understand how the new system works (Rogers, 2003). Resistance will definitely be greater if the system appears to be very complicated. Simplifying things will make the nurses to easily master the new technology. According to Rogers (2003), triability is another quality that is likely to determine the attitude of these nurses towards the new EHR system. The facilitator should show the nurse...
