Commonly referred to as the Obama care, the patient protection and affordable care act of 2010, is one of the landmark legislations that the health care sector has implemented. This is an act that in the last few years has elicited mixed feeling among the medical professionals and the public as well. The health care has been marred in the past by racial, ethnic and economic disparities locking out some of the patients from quality health care. Kaiser Family Foundation's offers a summary that easy to follow through with the basic elements of the Act for references in the health sector (Kff.org, 2015).
This is an ACT that places the patients in charge of the health care services they receive. It reduces disparity in the health sector in a number of ways, one of them being the fact that it removes the exclusion of children with pre-existing conditions. People below the age of 26 years can also be covered under their parents. Insurers can also not withdraw coverage arbitrarily as they used to for the people who made a mistake with their premiums (Kff.org, 2015). Insurance companies also cannot raise their premiums as they wish due to perceived administrative costs. Particularly the level of disparity has been lowered due to the impacts of the Medicaid. The gap that has been positively affected is that which has been existent between the whites and the blacks (Kff.org, 2015). As more minorities from the low incomes segments are absorbed in the program.For the Hispanics and blacks, who will not be covered under their employers, they can access these services under government regulated insurance exchanges; providing for more than 32 million.
