Descriptive Statistics You have just been appointed as a member of the committee that decides which researchers get funded for their studies. Your responsibility is to review and evaluate the research studies and make recommendations for future funding. A research team at a large university hospital has just completed a pilot study of an innovative new treatment for patients in the later stages of brain cancer within 4 weeks of agreeing to participate in the study. Here from lowest to highest, are the number of weeks the patients lived after treatment began: 3, 5, 6, 6, 8, 8, 9, 9, 9, 10, 11, 45 The mean number of weeks that a brain cancer patient usually lives after receiving a confirmed diagnosis of being in stage 4 is 9.6 (with a standard deviation of 3.2). The researchers were overjoyed that the mean number of weeks the patients in their study survived was 10.75, with a standard deviation of 11.02. Remember, you are on the committee that will decide whether to give grant money to researchers in the hospital. Write a 1 - 2 page essay expressing your views on the level of promise this study shows. For the essay, keep in mind what you learned in this module about normal distribution; measures of central tendency & and under what conditions the different types of measures should be used; the meaning of the standard deviation, and any other relevant comments you would have as a member of the committee evaluating this study to determine if more money should be granted to these researchers.

NAME INSTITUTION LECTURER SUBJECT DATE OF SUBMISSION The Brain Cancer treatment has achieved impressive results since it was published in 2000. However, demographic trends, new treatments, increasing survival rates and reforms in the NHS have altered the context in which cancer services operate. (Bolden S, Greenlee RT, Murray T and Wingo PA, 2000). Improving the number of survival, more research should be done in order to increase the number of survival of the persons affected by the brain cancer, and this will require coordinated efforts for the researchers for them to increase the mean number of weeks the patient can live. This is a tremendous job done by the researchers and more needs to be done to increase the result of their findings on the mean number of weeks that a brain cancer patient usually lives after receiving a confirmed diagnosis of being in stages from the mean found of 10.75, with a standard deviation of 11.02. A new strategy for fighting cancer starts today and these will be indicate, dedicated to pursuing cancer research on those fronts that offer the most promise rather than simply fighting "cancer by the numbers" as we have for the past 70 years. And in doing so, the research team will pledge that the fight against cancer will be won. The current economy will decrease the chances of the patient with cancer due to lack of enough resources to incur the challenges patients suffering with the disease. Funding the researchers will not only be appropriate but the team will insure more research is done to come up with cure. If it shows the positive result still, there will be more funding. Stan...
